Unit 1:
Hippo, Monkey, Dog and Cat are in the garden. Hippo says, ‘I can jump. Look! Jump, jump, jump.’
Monkey says, ‘I can jump. Look! Jump, jump, jump.’
Dog says, ‘I can jump. Look! Jump, jump, jump.’ ‘Can Cat jump?’ says Hippo. ‘Zzz.’ ‘No,’ says Monkey.
‘Yes. Cat can jump,’ says Dog. ‘Look! Woof!’ ‘Miaow!’
Unit 2:
Hippo, Monkey, Dog and Cat are in the garden. ‘Look!’ says Monkey. ‘I can clap five. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5.’ ‘Oh, clever Monkey!’ says Hippo.
‘Look! I can skip five. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5.’ ‘Oh, clever Hippo!’ says Dog.
‘Look! I can jump five. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5.’ ‘Oh, clever Dog! Clever Hippo! Clever Monkey!’ says Cat.
‘But look! I can nod five. 1, 2, 3, 4 … Zzz.’ ‘Oh, Cat!’ says Monkey.
Unit 3:
Hippo, Monkey, Dog and Cat are in the garden. ‘Look! Paint. Red paint, blue paint, yellow paint, lots of paint. Wow!’ says Monkey.
‘Let’s paint a hippo!’ says Hippo. ‘No. Let’s paint a monkey!’ says Monkey. ‘No. Let’s paint a dog!’ says Dog. ‘No. Let’s paint a cat!’ says Cat. Hippo thinks and thinks and thinks. ‘I know,’ says Hippo. ‘A rainbow! Let’s paint a rainbow!’
So Hippo, Monkey, Dog and Cat paint a beautiful rainbow.
‘Wow! What a beautiful rainbow!’ says Hippo.
Unit 4:
Hippo, Monkey, Dog and Cat are playing. ‘Oh dear. Where’s my doll?’ says Hippo. ‘Look!’ says Monkey. ‘I can see the doll.’ ‘Thank you, Monkey.’
‘Oh dear. Where’s my teddy?’ says Monkey. ‘Look!’ says Dog. ‘I can see the teddy.’ ‘Thank you, Dog.’
‘Oh dear. Where’s my ball?’ says Dog. ‘Look!’ says Cat. ‘I can see the ball.’ ‘Thank you, Cat.’
‘Oh dear. Where’s my train?’ says Cat. ‘Look!’ says Hippo. ‘I can see the train.’ ‘Thank you, Hippo.’
Unit 5:
Hippo, Monkey, Dog and Cat are playing. Hippo says, ‘I’m a bus. The bus has wheels and the wheels go round.’
Monkey says, ‘I’m a car. The car has wheels and the wheels go round.’
Dog says, ‘I’m a boat. I go splish splash, splish splash on the water.’
Cat says, ‘I’m a train. Come on, Hippo! Come on, Monkey! Come on, Dog!’ ‘Choo choo, choo choo! Ha ha ha!’
Unit 6:
Hippo, Monkey, Dog and Cat are in the farmyard. ‘Moo!’ ‘Oh! What’s that?’ says Hippo. ‘I don’t know,’ says Monkey.
They see a sheep. ‘Hello,’ says Hippo. ‘Hello,’ says the sheep. ‘Erm, do you say moo?’ asks Hippo. ‘Oh, no!’ says the sheep. ‘I’m a sheep. I say baa, baa!’ ‘Oh, thank you, Sheep!’ says Hippo.
They see a duck. ‘Hello,’ says Hippo. ‘Hello,’ says the duck. ‘Erm, do you say moo?’ asks Hippo. ‘Oh, no!’ says the duck. ‘I’m a duck. I say quack quack!’ ‘Oh, thank you, Duck!’ says Hippo.
They see a cow. ‘Hello,’ says Hippo. ‘Hello,’ says the cow. ‘Erm, do you say moo?’ asks Hippo. ‘Moo! Yes,’ says the cow. ‘I’m a cow. I say moo!’ ‘Hooray!’ ‘Thank you, Cow!’
PŘÍBĚHY - HIPPO & Friends Level 1
Unit 1:
Hippo, Monkey, Dog and Cat like school. They go to school every day.
At school, Monkey opens his bag. He takes out his crayons, he takes out his pen and he takes out his book, but … Oh, dear! Where are his pencils? Monkey looks in the bag again. ‘No pencils. Oh, dear!’ Monkey says. What’s the matter, Monkey?’ says Hippo. ‘Oh, dear!’ says Monkey. ‘No pencils.’
‘We can help,’ says Hippo. Hippo, Dog and Cat give Monkey some pencils.
‘Oh, now I have 1…2…3…4…5…6…7…8…9…10. Ten pencils. Thank you, Hippo. Thank you, Dog. Thank you, Cat.’
Unit 2:
It’s night-time and Hippo, Monkey, Dog and Cat are in the garden. They can see the moon. ‘Look!’ says Hippo. ‘The moon is round. It has a face.’
‘Oh, yes! Look! It has two eyes, a nose and a mouth,’ says Monkey. ‘I know – let’s smile at the moon!’ says Dog.
So Hippo smiles at the moon. Monkey smiles at the moon. Dog smiles at the moon. Cat smiles at the moon.
And the moon? … The moon … smiles back.
Unit 3:
This is Hippo’s little house. Look! It has a roof, it has a blue door and it has four windows. 1, 2, 3, 4. And there’s Hippo. Hello, Hippo.
This is Monkey’s little house. Look! It has a roof, it has a yellow door and it has four windows. 1, 2, 3, 4. And there’s Monkey. Hello, Monkey.
This is Dog’s little house. Look! It has a roof, it has a red door and it has four windows. 1, 2, 3, 4. And there’s Dog. Hello, Dog.
This is Cat’s little house. Look! It has a roof, it has a red door and it has four windows. 1, 2, 3, 4. And there’s … Oh, where’s Cat? Ah, look! There’s Cat … asleep. Oh, Cat!
Unit 4:
Hippo, Monkey, Dog and Cat are very happy. Elephant has come with her family. Elephant says, ‘This is my mummy and this is my daddy.’
‘This is my brother and this is my sister.’
‘And this is my … Oh! … Grandma? Where’s Grandma? Grandma! Grandma! Where are you?
‘Shh. Look!’ says Mummy Elephant. ‘There’s Grandma, asleep under the tree – with Cat.’ ‘Oh, Cat!’
Unit 5:
Hippo likes the weather when it’s raining. Hippo has some wellies.
Monkey likes the weather when it’s windy. Monkey has a coat.
Dog likes the weather when it’s snowing. He has a scarf and some gloves.
Cat likes the weather when it’s sunny. She has a hat. Oh, Cat!
Unit 6:
It’s sunny and hot. Hippo, Monkey, Dog and Cat are in the garden. Elephant is in the garden, too. ‘Oh, dear! Where are the flowers?’ says Hippo. ‘Yes. Where are the flowers?’ says Monkey. ‘There aren’t any flowers,’ says Cat.
‘Don’t worry. I can help,’ says Elephant. ‘Look!’ Elephant waters the garden.
‘Look at the flowers!’ says Hippo. ‘Wow! Red, yellow, blue, orange and purple flowers!’
‘Thank you, Elephant. Thank you. The flowers are lovely.
Unit 7:
Hippo, Monkey, Dog and Cat are playing in the garden. ‘Slowly, slowly, slowly. What am I?’ asks Dog. ‘Erm, are you a tortoise?’ asks Monkey. ‘Yes, I am. Clever Monkey!’
‘My turn. Slowly, slowly, slowly. What am I?’ asks Monkey. ‘Erm, are you an elephant?’ ‘Yes, I am. Clever Hippo!’
‘My turn. Snap, snap, snap!’ ’Are you a crocodile?’ ‘Yes, I am. Clever Cat!’
‘My turn. Zzzzzz.’ ‘I know,’ says Dog. ‘Are you a sleeping lion?’ Cat opens one eye. ‘Yes, I am. Clever Dog!‘ she says.
Unit 8:
Hippo, Monkey, Dog and Cat are shopping. Hippo says ‘Let’s buy four pears!’ Monkey says ‘Let’s buy four bananas!’ Dog says ‘Let’s buy four apples!’ Cat says ‘Let’s buy four oranges!’
So Hippo buys 1 … 2 … 3 … 4 pears. Monkey buys 1 … 2 … 3 … 4 bananas. Dog buys 1 … 2 … 3 … 4 apples and Cat buys 1 … 2 … 3 … 4 oranges.
Hippo, Monkey, Dog and Cat are very happy and they walk back to the garden.
Hippo counts her pears. ‘1 … 2 … 3 … 4.’ Dog counts his apples. ‘1 … 2 … 3 … 4.’ Cat counts her oranges. ‘1 … 2 … 3 … 4.’
Monkey counts his bananas. ‘1 … ’ ‘Oh, Monkey!’
Unit 9:
Hippo, Monkey, Dog and Cat are at the seaside. ‘Let’s play in the sand with our buckets and spades!’ says Hippo. ‘Hooray!
Hippo makes a house. Monkey makes a banana. ‘Oh, what a lovely house!’ says Dog. ‘And what a lovely banana!’ says Cat.
Dog makes a face. ‘Oh, clever Dog!’ says Hippo. ‘Oh, where is Cat?’ says Monkey.
‘… Oh, Cat!’

Unit 1:
The holidays have finished and tomorrow Hippo is going to school. Hippo is very excited. She says, ‘I have my bag and my pencil and my crayons and my book. Now I can go to sleep.’ But can Hippo sleep?
No, Hippo can’t sleep. Hippo counts her crayons again: ‘1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10.’ But can Hippo sleep?
No, Hippo can’t sleep. Hippo looks out at the stars. She counts the stars: ‘1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10…’. At last, Hippo goes to sleep.
In the morning, Hippo goes to school and sees all her friends and her teacher. She is very, very happy.
Unit 2:
Monkey isn’t happy. ‘Oh, dear! I can’t find my red sock.’ Hippo says, ‘Hello, Monkey. What’s the matter?’ ‘Oh, dear! I can’t find my red sock.’ ‘Don’t worry, Monkey. I can help.’ So Monkey and Hippo look for the red sock.
Dog says, ‘Hello, Monkey. Hello, Hippo. What’s the matter?’ ‘Oh, dear! I can’t find my red sock.’ ‘Don’t worry, Monkey. Don’t worry, Hippo. I can help.’ So Monkey, Hippo and Dog look for the red sock.
Cat says, ‘Hello, Monkey. Hello, Hippo. Hello, Dog. What’s the matter?’ ‘Oh, dear! I can’t find my red sock.’ ‘Don’t worry, Monkey. Don’t worry, Hippo. Don’t worry, Dog. I can help.’ So Monkey, Hippo, Dog and Cat look for the red sock.
Cat says, ‘Monkey, I can see your red sock.’ ‘Where?’ says Monkey. ‘Where?’ says Hippo. ‘Where?’ says Dog. ‘It’s on your tail!’ ‘Oh, Monkey!
Unit 3:
Hippo, Monkey, Dog and Cat are in the garden.
Hippo is counting. ‘1 … 2 … 3 … 4 … 5 …’ ‘What are you doing?’ asks Monkey. ‘I’m counting the leaves.’ ‘I can help,’ says Monkey.
Now Hippo and Monkey are counting. ‘1 … 2 … 3 … 4 … 5 … 6 … ’ ‘What are you doing?’ asks Dog. ‘We’re counting the leaves,’ says Monkey. ‘I can help,’ says Dog.
Now Hippo, Monkey and Dog are counting. ‘1 … 2 … 3 … 4 … 5 … 6 … 7 … ’ ‘What are you doing?’ asks Cat. ‘We’re counting the leaves,’ says Dog. ‘I can help,’ says Cat. Now Hippo, Monkey, Dog and Cat are counting. ‘1 … 2 … 3 … 4 … 5 … 6 … 7 … 8 … 9 … 10! Hooray! ’
Unit 4:
Hippo wants to play. ‘Mummy, Daddy, will you play?’ But Mummy and Daddy are busy. ‘Sorry, Hippo. We’re busy. We can’t play.’ ‘I can help,’ says Hippo. So Hippo helps Mummy and Daddy. ‘Thank you, Hippo.’
Hippo says, ‘Grandma, Grandpa, will you play?’ But Grandma and Grandpa are busy. ‘Sorry, Hippo. We’re busy. We can’t play.’ ‘I can help,’ says Hippo. So Hippo helps Grandma and Grandpa. ‘Thank you, Hippo.’
Hippo says, ‘Brother, sister, will you play?’ But brother and sister are busy. ‘Sorry, Hippo. We’re busy. We can’t play.’ ‘I can help,’ says Hippo. So Hippo helps brother and sister. ‘Thank you, Hippo.’
Soon Mummy, Daddy, Grandma, Grandpa, brother and sister are finished and they can all play with Hippo. Everyone is happy.
Unit 5:
It’s carnival time and Hippo, Monkey, Dog and Cat are at the party. Hippo says ‘Look at me! I’m a fairy!’ ’Wow!
Monkey says ‘Look at me! I’m a pirate!’ ’Wow!
Dog says ‘Look at me! I’m a clown!’ ’Wow!
Hippo says, ‘Cat, are you a witch?’ ‘No,’ says Cat. ‘I’m a princess … a sleeping princess … Zzzzzzzz.’ ‘Oh, Cat!’
Unit 6:
Hippo, Monkey, Dog and Cat are in the garden. Hippo says, ‘When I grow up, I want to be a pilot. I want to fly my aeroplane up and down again.’
Monkey says, ‘When I grow up, I want to be a doctor. I want to go in an ambulance. Nee naw, nee naw.’
Dog says, ‘When I grow up, I want to be a police officer. I want to drive a police car.
Dog says, ‘Cat, what do you want to be when you grow up?’ Cat says, ‘When I grow up, I want to … sleep.’ ‘Oh, Cat!
Unit 7:
Hippo, Monkey, Dog and Cat are in the garden. ‘Hey, lets have a picnic!’ says Hippo.
So Hippo brings bread and cheese. ‘I like bread and cheese. Yum yum.’ Monkey brings bananas and cake. ‘I like bananas and cake. Yum yum.’
Dog brings cherries and apples. ‘I like cherries and apples. Yum yum.’ And Cat brings salad and oranges. ‘I like salad and oranges. Yum yum.’
So Hippo, Monkey, Dog and Cat have a picnic in the garden. ‘What a wonderful picnic!’ says Hippo.
Unit 8:
Monkey is sad. Monkey can’t find Hippo. ‘Hippo, Hippo! Where are you?’ says Monkey. Monkey sees a tiger and a giraffe. ‘Hello. Can you help me?’ he says. ‘I can’t find Hippo.’ ‘Sorry,‘ says the giraffe. ‘We can’t help you,‘ says the tiger.
Monkey sees a snake and a crocodile. ‘Hello. Can you help me?’ he says. ‘I can’t find Hippo.’ ‘Sorry,‘ says the snake. ‘We can’t help you,‘ says the crocodile.
Monkey is sad, so he sits on a rock. ‘Oh, dear!’ he says. ‘Where are you, Hippo?’
‘Here I am!’ says Hippo. The rock was Hippo! ‘Oh, Hippo, I’m so happy!’
Unit 9:
It’s summer. It’s hot and Hippo, Monkey, Dog and Cat are in the country. Hippo is reading, Monkey is climbing a tree, Dog is jumping and Cat is sleeping.
It’s very, very hot. Hippo is sleeping, Monkey is climbing a tree, Dog is sleeping and Cat is … Oh, where’s Cat?
It’s very, very, very hot. Hippo is sleeping, Monkey is sleeping, Dog is sleeping and Cat is …
